Program Purpose
To provide college financial assistance to students whose parent died as a result of illness or injury related to service in the U.S. Military or the National Guard
Eligibility Requirements
- Are a Texas resident at the time he/she uses the exemption
- Are the dependent child of an individual who died as a result of injury or illness related to service in the U.S. Military or the National Guard
- Have used up all federal educational benefits for which he/she is eligible
- Enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its costs), unless the college governing board has voted to allow Hazelwood exemptions for all courses.
Eligible Institutions
Available only for use at a Texas public college or university.

Award Amount
Payment of all dues, fees, and charges, including fees for correspondence courses but excluding property deposit fees, student service fees, and any fees or charges for lodging, board, or clothing. No funds may be used to pay tuition for continuing education classes for which the college receives no state tax support.
Application Process
Provide proof to the college registrar that you meet the requirements outlined above, including documentation from the Department of Defense or the National Guard regarding the parent’s service-related death.
